Our story of tea began back almost 10 years ago when Matt came home with a surprise anniversary gift. His idea was to get something that both of us could enjoy. Sure enough he stopped at a tea room! At that time, Matt didn’t know much about loose tea because we rarely drank tea. After smelling different kinds of tea from taster jars along with a lot of help from the tea room owner, Matt picked a few blends that had good appearance and smell. On that very night, we learned how to brew our first cup of loose tea. Little did we know that we would enjoy it so much, we would build a business around it!
The more we learn and involve ourselves with tea, the more we became fascinated with it! To us, tea is more than just a drink. It is a fun subject matter that has its own world with a great history and full of art and science. Tea has really become an integral part of our life. It overlaps with so much of the things we enjoy doing such as traveling, cooking, learning new things, meeting new people, or simply just spending time with our friends and family. As our knowledge grew, we began sharing our love of tea with others. Matt even started a tea club at his work. Unfortunately or fortunately, the tea shop in the area where Matt first bought our tea closed, and we were left without a local source of loose tea. Every cloud has a silver lining though, so we seized the opportunity to get into the tea business ourselves.
Short and Stout started as an online business in 2011, as well as doing vendor sales at local craft fairs. In April 2013, we had an opportunity to rent a space right in Guilderland, New York within walking distance from our home where we raise our three girls. We renovated the space and opened our doors in October 2013 to what is now our full-service tea shop – Short and Stout Specialty Tea Shop.
This was a dream come true for us to be able to build on our original concept of making tea fun and accessible to everyone in Albany and the Capital Region. The tea shop gives us the opportunity to interact one-on-one with our customers, to educate, and to continue to learn and experiment ourselves. Short and Stout doesn’t feel like a job because we love what we are doing and like the old saying goes, “Do what you love and never work a day for the rest of your life.”
We love experimenting with tea and coming up with new tea recipes both for drinking and eating. Check out the Sweet & Savory Pastries section to see what I’ve been cooking up. Visit our BLOG for fun ideas and recipes.
